Rat Terriers are a feisty little breed. Literally. They were once known as Feists (in England). They are compact little dogs, rough and ready for any adventure. Ratties love their families and love to spend time with them. They are great kids' dogs, and generally get along well with other animals (except mice/gerbils/hamster, etc) if they are raised with them. They are short-coated and shed lightly, but with brushing, especially in the spring time, any excess shedding can be reduced. They are not yappy dogs, but do like to let you know what's going on. They will "sound" an alarm if something new is happening, but will generally quiet down once they determine all is well in their world. Because of cross breeding with other breeds in their history, Ratties are generally a little more calm than the average terrier. They are very energetic and athletic but just as easily slip into a couch potato, especially if you'll sit with them. They are smart little dogs, but can be stubborn at times. Obedience training is definitely called for with this breed. All breeds benefit from training, but Ratties will especially do better and live better. According to the United Kennel Club, Ratties come in two sizes, the miniature which is under 13 pounds and the standard which is over 13 pounds. However, there is another size called Deckers which are as much as 35 pounds. Here at Munchkins, we breed miniatures and standards. History of the Rat Terrier: The Rat Terrier has a long and colorful history. The Rattie was developed in the US in the early to mid 1800's using the extinct Feist of England--the old white terrier. With regional demands, the Feist was crossed with the Manchester Terrier and Fox Terrier. Added in were Beagle for scent abilities and Whippet for their sight abilities. To achieve a smaller dog, Chihuahua was added in. There is some mention of Dacshund and even Corgi added. The result is the Rat Terrier, which comes in three sizes: Standard, Miniature and Toy.
