The Chihuahua is a neat little dog. Their cute faces and zippy attitude make them a wonderful and enjoyable companions. They can, however, be unfriendly and even snappy in some circumstances. The Chihuahua is a great companion for adults and older children. But, they don't do well with small or boisterous children. They are an easy keeper, not requiring much in the way of food or grooming. They are perfect for small homes and small budgets. The Chihuahua loves being the center of attention and can be quite adventerous in attaining that special spot in your life. Chihuahuas get along well with other Chis, but don't always get along with other breeds. They are stubborn when defending "their" territory and don't realize how small they are. These are definitely "big" dogs in little packages. For more information on pet care, please visit our pet care pages.
The History of the Chihuahua: It is generally recognized that the Chihuahua is from Mexico. However, not everyone believes this to be true. There is some speculation that the Chihuahua came from far off places like North Africa, Malta, Egypt, or China. Whatever the beginnings, the Chihuahua is an ancient breed. Its beginnings in the US start in the mid 1800's with finds of a small breed of dog in Mexico. The Texas or Arizona dogs began crossing into the US in the later 1800's and were perhaps cross with a small black and tan terrier to create the characteristics of today's smooth-coated breed. The long-coated dogs may have been cross with such toys as Pomeranians or Papillons to get the long coat associated with them today. |
