Boston Terrier-Breed Information
The Boston Terrier is a distinguished-looking dog with an excellent disposition of
friendliness. They are lively dogs and very smart, however, the Boston may not be suitable
for families with very young children, as the Boston doesn't always realize his level of
playfulness.
The Boston is an "easy keeper" with a short coat that requires very little maintenance. A
bath every six weeks (or when your Boston makes a mess) with occasional wiping down in
between, clipping nails (if you're comfortable doing this) and your yearly visit to the vet and
your Boston is set. For more information on the care of a short-coated dog, please visit our
pet care pages.
The History of the Boston Terrier:
The Boston Terrier is an all American Classic. The Boston begins its journey in the 1800's
in, you guessed it, Boston, Massachusetts. The background of the Boston includes the
crossing and introduction of breeds like the English Bulldog and English Terrier, and
perhaps, later on, the French Bulldog. From these crossings we would eventually get the
Old Bull and Terrier. This breed would eventually split into two camps. Those wanting the
more bulldoggy look and those wanting the terrier look. From these beginnings we get the
Old Boston Bulldog and the Boston Terrier.
The Boston Terrier would continue to be refined and scaled down from its original weight of
around 30 pounds to the more common lighter weight of today. The Boston would further
be condensed to the colors most widely know today: the brindle/black/seal and white colors
recognized today. However, the original Bull and Terrier was of all colors commonly
accepted of the bulldog of that time. You can still find some of the original colors from time
to time.
