Thanks Eukanuba for helping with this growth chart....

At birth:  Your puppy is blind and deaf.  It goes by smell alone--sniffing out mama and milk!

At two weeks:  Eyes are probably open although the puppy's vision is still pretty cloudy.  Ears will open in another week or so.

At one month: Milk teeth are coming in and food can be introduced.  Mama gets more of a break from the babies.

At one and-a-half months:  Nipping, play fighting and chewing begin.  Mama usually has had it with the kids and weaning is normally complete.  About 70% of adult brain mass is present. Puppies are more social and ready to interact with people.  First shots are usually done around 6 weeks.

At two months:  Most puppies are ready to go home (tiny ones may need a little more time).  Housebreaking begins in earnest and so do teaching manners.  The puppies can get their second set of shots at this time.  Talk to your vet about your puppy's health care needs for your area.

At three months:  Playful interacting usually starts and puppy will love to chase.  Puppy should know his/her name and about 90% of adult brain mass is present.

At four months:  Puppy starts responding to commands.

At five months:  After vaccinations are complete, puppy training can begin.  Small breeds are pretty much grown at this point.  Puppies may fill out a little more, but pretty much what you see is what you'll have as an adult size.

At six months:  Fetching: toys remain important through adulthood.  Obedience should be well accomplished by now.  Spay and neuter should be done by this time as small breed dogs can reach sexual maturity by this age.

At seven months:  Milk teeth are lost and most adult teeth are in--teething should be done!  The shoes are Safe!!! (maybe *grin*)

At eight months:  Puppy can be expected to hold elimination for about eight (8) hours.

At nine months:  Puppy training classes complete.

At twelve months:  Most inner and outer growth is complete (between 9-12 months for small breeds).  Talk to your vet about when to switch to adult formulas.

At eighteen months:  Puppyhood is nearly done.  You should start seeing more adult behavior in your dog (of course, some dogs Never grow up)

This chart is a guide and some puppies will reach milestones sooner or later than others.
ENJOY!
